About Islora

Islands worth travelling for, that nobody can find

Islora is being built to make island tourism in the Philippines findable. Not the parts that are already famous — the parts that are not.

It starts in Dinagat Islands, a province at the northern tip of Mindanao with lagoons, limestone islets and freshwater lakes that almost nobody outside the region has heard of. That is not an accident of quality. It is an accident of distribution.

The opportunity

The gap we are building into

Dinagat has nine tour operators accredited by the provincial tourism office. Every one of them sells a version of the same two boat routes, at broadly the same price, buying boats from the same operators' association fare table. Nobody has a cost advantage on the water, so the only way to compete is to charge less.

Two things follow from that, and both are opportunities rather than complaints.

Nobody sells the island itself

Not one published itinerary goes inland. The shrine above San Jose, the hilltop castle, the ship-shaped provincial capitol, the ridge of dwarf forest down the island's spine — none of it is on sale, and all of it runs on days when the sea is closed.

Nobody sells the evening

Every itinerary on the island finishes by half past three. The best hour of the day on Dinagat, from the mountain above Basilisa looking west over the archipelago, is not a product anyone offers.

Nobody is findable

Most operators are discoverable only through a Facebook page, and only if you already know the name. A traveller searching by destination rather than by business finds almost nothing.

Approach

How we are building it

Supply before demand

A marketplace with three listings helps nobody. Islora is recruiting operators first and will open to travellers when there is enough on it to plan a real trip around. That is why there is no launch date on this site.

One region, properly

Dinagat first, in depth, with the inland and evening products nobody else sells. Other destinations follow once the model works somewhere.

Designed around how it actually works

Coast Guard clearance, association boat fares that step at fixed group sizes, cash settlement on the day, weather that closes the sea for months. Islora is being designed around these rather than around a European city-break model.

The operator is the product

Travellers come back for the person who ran the trip, not for the platform that listed it. Operators keep their rates, their guests and their other channels.

Commitments

What Islora will not do

These are easier to write down now, before there is any commercial pressure to break them. They are enforced in the code as well as in policy.

  • No invented reviews or ratings. Listings show no score at all until real guests have left one — the data model makes a fabricated rating a build error, not just a bad decision.
  • No fake scarcity. No countdown timers, no “three people are viewing this”, no invented traveller counts or partner numbers.
  • No unearned badges. An operator is marked verified only after their permits have been checked, never on their own say-so.
  • No income promises to operators. We do not know what they will earn, and neither does anyone else at this stage.
  • No quiet changes to commercial terms. Founding operators see them in draft, with time to object, before anything is signed.
Team

Who is behind it

Islora is founded by Je Ursos, who runs Laaganan Travel & Tours in Dinagat Islands — the tour operator, the shuttle vehicle and the mountain restaurant above Basilisa that appear as sample listings on this site.

That is the whole team. Islora has no employees, no funding and no technical co-founder yet. The product thinking comes from running an operator on the island rather than from studying the market from a distance: the boat fares, the weather cancellations and the settlement in cash are problems the founder has already had.

Laaganan is Islora's founding operator and its proof of concept. It gets no advantage on the platform for that.

Where things actually stand

Bookings taken
None. The booking flow on this site is a demonstration.
Signed operators
None. Recruitment is open.
Reviews
None, so no listing shows a rating.
Team
One founder. Looking for a technical co-founder.
Funding
None raised.
Launch date
Not fixed. Supply comes first.

This table is here so nobody has to guess. It will change as things change.

Two conversations worth having right now

Islora needs operators, and it needs someone to build with. If either is you, get in touch — directly, not through a form you never hear back from.

Or write to ujeeursos@gmail.com — it reaches Je Ursos directly.
